The Chevrolet Corvette is one of the most iconic sports cars in history. This sleek and sexy performance model has been thrilling drivers for more than sixty years. Today’s Corvette models have evolved to include the latest advances in performance, engineering, and design. While the 2015 Corvette may be the ultimate modern driving machine, it owes its roots to the original Corvette model from 1953. Let’s take a look back at the very first Chevy Corvette.
Concept and Design
The first Corvette, known as the C-1, was designed by a man named Henry J. Earl. By the early 1950s, Earl had made his name as a top automotive designer for GM. In 1953, Earl was asked to design his dream car, the Corvette. Earl designed the first Corvette with a sleek fiberglass exterior and bold styling cues that provided this production model with a custom car appeal.
Under the hood, the first C-1 Corvette contained components that had proven their performance in other popular Chevrolet vehicles. For example, the Corvette boasted a powerful Blue-Flame six cylinder engine and a responsive Powerglide transmission. These elements combined to provide the driver with an athletic and sporty feel on the road.
Chevrolet limited the initial run of the first Corvette to 300 models. Each 1953 C-1 Corvette came styled with white exterior paint, a black canvas roof, and a red leather interior. From this early model, the Corvette’s legacy of sports car excellence was born.
